A claim to fame...

My cousin Alex recently tried out for "American Idol" when the auditions were held in Salt Lake last month and I guess didn't make it far enough to sing for the celebrity judges. He was close enough to want to try again, so he flew to another city where they were having auditions to try again. His family hasn't mentioned any more about it, so my guess is that he made it to sing for Randy, Simon and Paula, was sent through to Las Vegas, and had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Hey, I prefer to think positively about it. After all, he is one of my relatives and I do come from a very musical family. If I can have a sister in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, surely I can have a cousin who wins "American Idol," right?

So I got to thinking. What if he does win? Then I would have a very famous cousin. Even if he made it to the top 20, he would be famous. He would then be my claim to fame. I have seen him from time to time at various family gatherings and we do share grandparents on one side. It would make a great story to tell people when I have to introduce myself and tell something interesting about me. It would sure beat my current response, which is that I can speak Romanian without showing my teeth. Hey, not everyone can do that!

It could also potentially beat my current famous person story. Right now the most famous person I've seen in person is Chris Rock. He is more famous than Orrin Hatch, right? Anyway, Jason and I were on our honeymoon in Orlando and we got into the elevator at the hotel, and there was Chris Rock! With a body guard of course. We smiled and said hi. He smiled and said hi in return. Very normal. Just so you know, he is very small. Petite might be a better word to describe him. He looked like I could fold him up and put him in my purse. His body guard looked to be about four times his size. Small, small, small.

So that is my famous person story - at least for now. Alex, just so you know, I am rooting for you. Not just because it would fulfill one of your dreams to win and you are a talented singer, but because my famous person story is almost ten years old and I really need a new one. Good luck!

You make a very good point. I was kind of patiently waiting for Monte to give us the update on Alex's audition, but maybe the fact that we haven't heard means something itself.

Speculation, my favorite past-time. Now if that were an olympic sport I'd have a pretty good chance of medalling.

For the record. We came up with this idea on the phone together. I deserve credit. Good luck Alex!

And yet somehow it ended up on my blog and not yours. Nice try Malauna.

Shanda, we all feel the same about Alex - wouldn't it be fantastic if he made it to the top 20? I really think he deserves it!

Well I guess I'll end the suspense then. Alex didn't make it in Kansas City either. He made a big deal about me not telling people, so I guess it kind of left me gun shy about blogging about it. Sorry to take away a potential claim to fame for you, but Alex is convinced that he will be famous someday, so perhaps at some point you can claim you're related to a famous rock star.

That is too bad for Alex. I guess I am left with my Chris Rock story for now. Don't worry, I will keep my eyes open for someone else famous.
